Bomb Explosion Kills UN Peacekeeper in North-East Mali

A UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) peacekeeper was killed and three others were injured when an improvised explosive device burst in the northeast of Mali, according to a UN official.

El-Ghassim Wane, the UN mission’s chief, tweeted on Saturday that a MINUSMA vehicle had collided with an IED near Tessalit in the Kidal district.

“The death toll is one and three serious injuries. This reminds us of the ongoing danger to our peacekeepers and the sacrifices made for peace in Mali,’’ Wane tweeted.

The UN mission in northern Mali has been the victim of many strikes in recent weeks.

An explosive device near the MINUSMA camp in Kidal injured three MINUSMA personnel on Sept. 11.

Mali has been in the midst of multidimensional security, political, and economic crisis since 2012.

Thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced as a result of separatist insurgencies, jihadist incursions, and intercommunal violence.

Despite the presence of UN, African, and European soldiers, these events are taking place.
