The Ministry of Defence in Rwanda has reported that three soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo crossed the border overnight. According to the statement, one of the Congolese soldiers was shot dead after firing at a military patrol, while the other two were arrested.
The soldiers were found in possession of an assault rifle and sachets of cannabis.
As both nations accuse each other of supporting rebel groups that threaten stability, relations between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo remain highly strained. The Kinshasa government accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23 Tutsi-led rebel group and engaging in mineral theft in eastern DR Congo, while Rwanda accuses its neighbour of backing Hutu rebels.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has not yet commented on the incident.
