The Nigerian government has approved N3 billion for each state to address natural disasters following severe flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Vice President Kashim Shettima announced this support, emphasising the government’s commitment to working with states to manage floods and other natural disasters. He highlighted the flooding in Borno as a national issue, affecting various parts of the country.
“It is a national calamity that has befallen us, and it is a concomitant effect of the incestuous relationship among climate change, ecology and the economy. From Bayelsa to Sokoto, there is hardly any part of this nation that has not been affected by these flooding incidences,” he said.
Shettima assured the public that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to address these challenges, including the impact of climate change. The financial assistance aims to ensure that all states feel supported in dealing with these crises.
“The president has shown his zeal, willingness and commitment to partner the states towards addressing these issues.
“Recently, he approved the release of N3 billion to each state of the federation to address some of these challenges so that all parts of the federation should have buy-in and belonging,” he said.
News Central reports that at least 30 people have been confirmed dead, and over 400 displaced in the flooding that happened after the Alau Dam collapsed.
Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, said the incident occurred as a result of an “unusually high volume of water this year”.
