The Executive Council of Borno State has approved the name change for the state-owned university to Kashim Ibrahim University in tribute to the first governor of the former Northern region.
This decision was reached during the first State Executive Council meeting of 2025, presided over by Governor Babagana Zulum.
The meeting, which concluded late on Monday at the Government House Council Chamber, lasted more than six hours and addressed significant issues impacting the state.
After the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof Usman Tar, informed reporters that the council reviewed 42 memos and evaluated the government’s performance from the previous year, along with future projections for 2025.
Tar went on to clarify that the renaming of the state university will require legislative processes and necessary notifications to relevant entities in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
“The council agreed that Borno State University will be renamed Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri. This will be contingent upon further legislative action by the State Assembly to amend the law that established the university.
Additionally, it relies on the education ministry taking the necessary steps to inform pertinent regulatory bodies such as the National Universities Commission (NUC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN),” stated Tar.
The council also gave the green light for naming streets and numbering houses in Maiduguri and other urban areas as part of Governor Zulum’s urban renewal initiative.
