Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi has suspended the Assistant Minister of Health and Wellness, Sethomo Lelatisitswe, for one month for violating COVID-19 protocols.
Lelatisitswe’s suspension is contained in a statement issued by Press Secretary to the President, Batlhalefi Leagajang.
He said, “The public is informed that the President, Mokgweetsi Masisi has taken the decision to suspend the Assistant Minister of Health and Wellness, Sethomo Lelatisitswe from his Ministerial duties for a period of one month, effective immediately.
“The suspension follows the recent violation of COVID-19 health restrictions by the Assistant Minister”
According to the statement, the assistant minister had convened a tombstone unveiling ceremony breaking the rules banning any form of public gatherings and shared images from the ceremony on social media.
In an apology, the minister said the date for the event had been set a long time ago and could not be changed.
The family was unveiling the tombstone of his father as their mother took off the mourning dress as per culture.
Yesterday Lethakane Police charged Lelatisitswe’s family member following the tombstone unveiling.
In Botswana, only cabinet meetings, parliament sessions, and funerals are permitted after the government banned all other gatherings because of rising Covid-19 cases.
