Bounty Killer, the well-known Dancehall veteran, recently expressed his opinion about Afrobeats lyrics, using Burna Boy’s hit single “Ye” as an example. During an interview, Rodney Basil Price, also known as Bounty Killer, claimed that Afrobeats songs generally lack meaningful lyrics.
A circulating video on Twitter shows the Jamaican singer explaining how Afrobeats artists, such as Burna Boy, prioritise melody over the lyrics in their music. By referencing Burna Boy’s Platinum-certified track “Ye,” he concludes that all Afrobeats songs suffer from a lack of depth in their lyrics.
Bounty Killer, 50 rose to prominence in the 90s and is considered one of the most influential dancehall lyricists of all time. He is known for his aggressive and often controversial lyrics, which touch on themes such as violence, poverty, and social injustice.
Some of his most popular songs include “Down in the Ghetto,” “Poor People’s Governor,” and “Sufferah.” He has collaborated with a number of other well-known artists in the reggae and dancehall genres, including Beenie Man, Elephant Man, and Mavado.
