Breaking: Burkina Faso Coup Leader Sworn in as President

Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba has been sworn in as the new president of Burkina Faso on Wednesday in a televised ceremony.

Damiba, head of the Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration, took his oath in front of the Constitutional Council to “preserve, respect, uphold and defend the Constitution, the fundamental act and the laws”.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union have suspended Burkina Faso from their bodies, without further sanctions, asking the junta for a “reasonable” timetable for this “return to constitutional order”.
