Nine suspected criminals have been killed during a shootout with police in Mariannhill, on Wednesday morning.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says the suspects were wanted for several violent crimes. He says in one incident the suspects raped a minor and forced her mother to watch. Police received information on a group of suspects who have been terrorising the area, committing violent crimes.
They responded and stormed the township, west of Durban in the early hours of Wednesday. The suspects shot at the police, to which police reacted and gunned 9 down, while 2 more are on the run.
“Three firearms have so far been found in possession of the suspects and a search is still ongoing. A manhunt for outstanding two suspects is underway,” Colonel Netshiunda added.
Officers are currently working on the crime scene. This is a developing story.
