BREAKING: Labour Unions Begin Massive Solidarity Protest in Lagos

Labour members from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), other unions, civil society groups are converged at the under bridge axis in Ikeja in solidarity with the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) in Nigeria.

Heavy presence of security operatives has impeded vehicular movements towards the protest venue. The security operatives, including Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and others are at the venue to prevent breach or attack on the protesters by thugs.

ASUU commenced its ongoing strike on February 14, shutting  all public universities after the FG failed to meet some demands of the union.

Various Unions including Electricity Workers Union, NUT among others have joined the solidarity protest

ASUU’s demands include: the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) platform for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.
