Breaking: Nigeria Disbands SARS

Nigeria has disbanded the police unit, Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, following days of protests across the West African nation.

The country’s Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, announced on Sunday afternoon the disolution of SARS units of the Nigeria Police Force across all formations in Nigeria.

He said the operatives will be redeployed to other police formations and commands.

News Central reports that Nigerians had taken to the street since last week to protest against the brutality and extra-judicial killings by SARS operatives nationwide.

While several demonstrations against SARS were being held in cities across Nigeria, the protests got backings from celebrities, organisations, rights groups – including Amnesty International – globally.

At Sunday briefing, the IGP said, “The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force otherwise known as SARS is hereby dissolved in all the 36 State Police Commands and the Federal Capital Territory.”
