Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The decision was reached at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community in Bissau, capital of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau on Sunday.
Tinubu is expected to lead the ECOWAS member-states toward economic development, political stability, and cooperation.
“We will take democracy seriously, Democracy is very tough but it is the form of government,” the Nigerian leader said after receiving handover notes from the outgoing chairman who is Guinea-Bissau’s President, Umaro Embaló.
The ECOWAS Chairmanship is a position held by one of the heads of state or government of the member countries, chosen on a rotating basis for a one-year tenure.
Former President Buhari held the position from 2018 to 2019.
As the newly appointed ECOWAS chairman, Tinubu will liaise closely with member states, regional institutions, and international agencies to implement initiatives aimed at promoting peace, economic growth, regional trade integration, and social development.
Tinubu is also expected to deepen the ECOWAS’ collective response to security threats and foster closer cooperation among member states in addressing regional challenges.
