The Coalition of Commercial Transport Operators has commenced an indefinite nationwide strike to protest the High cost of fuel prices in the country.
The Coalition had earlier threatened to embark on an indefinite strike action today Monday, 6th December, 2021 till government scraps off taxes like the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy, Special Petroleum Tax, the Energy Recovery Debt Levy and the Sanitation levy.
According to the operators, the government has failed to heed their request to scrap some levies on fuel to cause a reduction in price hence their decision to stay off the roads.
A representative of the group and the Head of the Communications for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, Abash Imoro said the action is an indication to the government that their concerns must be addressed.
He implored Ghanaians to bear with them as they embark on the strike while arguing that that the decision is not to punish passengers but to fight for better working conditions for drivers.
This action has left many Ghanaians who require public transit to commute to their various work places and schools stranded, with no feasible alternative.
The coalition of private transport operators consists of Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), Association of Tipper Truck Drivers, Harbor Transport Owners, Ghana National Cargo Transport Association, Ghana Committed Drivers Association, Concerned Drivers Association, Digital Drivers, Commercial motorbike riders, popularly referred to as Okada, the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers among others.
