Amadou Ba, the ruling coalition’s candidate in Senegal’s presidential race, has reached out to his opponent, opposition candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye, to acknowledge his victory in Sunday’s election, as confirmed by government spokesman Abdou Karim Fofana during a press briefing on Monday.

“Considering the trends of the presidential election results and awaiting the official declaration, I congratulate the president, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, on his victory in the first round,” Ba said in the statement.

Citizens made their way to polling stations across the country, casting their votes to determine the next leader of Senegal, marking a significant moment as the nation embarks on selecting its fifth president.

The election follows a tumultuous period of three years, characterised by widespread unrest and fervent anti-government protests that galvanised support for opposition factions.

Already, the streets of Dakar resonate with jubilation and excitement, reflecting the mood of the populace as the nation awaits the final and official announcement of results.
