The Supreme Court has affirmed the victory of the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

This is coming following the tribunal and Appeal Court judgment affirming his victory.

The Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour challenged Sanwo-Olu’s running mate qualification. He alleged that the deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, had renounced his citizenship as a Nigerian.

However, the court held that Sanwo-Olu’s deputy is a Nigerian by birth, adding that the renouncation of citizenship of citizens by birth must be registered by the Nigerian president. He added that the appellant did not provide evidence to that end.

The counsel to Sanwo-Olu, Nas Ogunsakin, urged the court to dismiss the appeals, noting that the applicants did not present evidence to support their claims and that the witnesses brought were incompetent.

On his part, PDP flagbearer, Abdulazeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor contended that the name Sanwo-Olu submitted to INEC was different from that contained in his WAEC certificate.

On Friday, a seven-member panel of justices led by Justice Mohammed Garba Lawal struck out the appeal of LP and PDP for wanting in merit.
