Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes revealed he reached out to former manager Erik ten Hag to apologise following the Dutchman’s dismissal this week.
Ten Hag, who led United to two trophies in his two full seasons, was let go with the club sitting 14th in the Premier League and facing Europa League struggles.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Fernandes, who was handed the captaincy by Ten Hag, admitted that the players felt responsible for the manager’s departure.
“It is easier to get rid of a manager than 15 players. I spoke to the manager and apologised to him, I was disappointed he has gone and I tried to help him. I wasn’t scoring goals, we are not scoring goals and I feel responsible,” he said.
“I normally score a lot of goals but I always gave 100 percent. He is aware of that,” he explained, adding that he was disappointed by Ten Hag’s exit and felt accountable for his own struggles in front of goal.
Fernandes, who scored in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, looks forward to working with incoming boss Ruben Amorim, set to take charge on November 11. The Portuguese coach, credited with reinvigorating Sporting Lisbon, is expected to lift spirits and drive results as United seek to recover from their worst league start since 1986.
