Retired Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, former Chief of Army Staff, has called upon military authorities to hasten counter-insurgency efforts in the Lake Chad Basin Region for a quick resolution to the conflict.

While addressing the 1st International Conference organised by the University of Maiduguri’s Department of History and Strategic Studies on Monday, Buratai lauded the military’s dedication and sacrifices in combating outlawed groups.

The conference aimed to gather experts and stakeholders to discuss strategies for addressing regional security challenges and promoting peace and development.

The former army general stressed the importance of avoiding prolonged conflict, drawing parallels with experiences in Colombia and Sri Lanka.

“We believe the war should end in a very short time and shouldn’t prolong like those in countries of Columbia and Sri Lanka,” he stated.

Buratai outlined the importance of coordinated military operations involving intelligence agencies, law enforcement, and local authorities to tackle regional security challenges effectively.

He expressed confidence in the military’s ability to reclaim territories and end hostilities.  He urged that the war should not be prolonged like conflicts in Colombia and Sri Lanka.

Reflecting on his tenure, Buratai mentioned the successful liberation of nine local government areas in Borno within five months.

University of Maiduguri’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba, praised the university’s resilience despite multiple suicide bomber attacks.
