A court source said on Tuesday that one individual has been apprehended and an investigation has been launched to investigate the cause of an explosion that killed hundreds of people at an illegal gold mining site in Burkina Faso.
News Central earlier reported that a blast happened on Monday in Gbomblora community, killing over 60 and injuring several.
The cause of the explosion is yet unknown as of the time of filing this report. The incident occurred in a market for small-scale gold miners, according to the source, who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak about it. The market was right next to the mine.
“In this type of market, everything is sold and even dangerous products prohibited by law, such as cyanide and dynamite. So we will have to look for the causes at this level,” the regional Governor, who confirmed the incident, said.
He added that health workers and security operatives had been deployed to help with rescue efforts, noting that the site has been closed until further notice, he said.
