Burkina Faso striker Jonathan Pitroipa quits international football at 33

Burkinabe forward, Jonathan Pitroipa has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 33, after 13 years playing for the national team.

Pitroipa who currently plays for French second division outfit Paris FC made his debut for his country in 2006, and represented the Stallions at five African Cup of Nations competitions.

He was named Player of the Tournament in the 2013 edition in South Africa where they finished runners-up after losing 1-0 to winners Nigeria in the finals, but helped them to a third-place finish in Gabon in 2017.

The Ouagadougou born striker also scored 19 goals in 84 appearances for the Burkinabe side.

Pitroipa wrote on his Facebook page: “Of course, the decision was very difficult to make, but it’s time for me to write another page of my life.

“These years spent with the national team have been incredibly emotional and above all an incredible life experience. I would first like to thank my teammates, supporters, people involved near and far and without forgetting my loved ones, my family who made this adventure so special.”

“I am proud to have put on the jersey and have contributed to writing the most beautiful pages in the history of Burkina Faso football.”

He also added that he would like to contribute to the growth of football in Burkina Faso.

“I hope I can continue to bring my experience to my young talented brothers, so that in turn, they make us dream, by raising the colours of our dearest nation. I will be very honoured to continue to contribute outside the field, to the progress of Burkina Faso football.”

His club career began in Germany with FC Freiburg and Hamburg, before moving to France with Rennes. He also had stints in the United Arab Emirates and Belgium.
