Burkina Faso Prime Minister Apollinaire Kyelem de Tambela has proposed the formation of a federation between Burkina Faso and Mali.

Kyelem de Tambela says both countries have shared interests and similar economic bases in cotton, cattle and gold, and that forming a shared market could provide more financial progress.

The proposal came amid both countries’ current military-led campaigns against terrorists and the withdrawal of French military forces.

Reports suggest that Burkina Faso is considering the idea of inviting in Russian Wagner Group mercenaries, while Mali has yet to give a response to the suggestion.

Though both Burkina Faso and Mali declared independence from France in 1960, their political stability has been relatively low.

It is unclear what the outcome of the federation proposal will be, but it could potentially bring economic and political stability to both countries.
