African Giant Burna boy has just joined the short list of Afrobeats stars to go platinum in the United States. The Grammy-winning musician has just earned his first platinum certification with his 2018 hit song, ‘Ye’ according to the RIAA.
The certification means that the 31 year old superstar has sold a million units for that record – joining Ckay’s ‘Love Nwantiti’, Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ and Davido’s ‘Fall’ to go platinum in the United States.
The Burna boy smash hit ‘Ye’ was off his 4th studio album ‘outside’ and has continued to enjoy massive acceptance over the past 4 years since its release. The song produced by Nigerian record producer Phantom peaked at number 26 and 31 on Billboard‘s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts that year and snatched the song of the year award at the Headies 2019.
Rolling Stone reported that “Ye” earned around 11 million streams over seven months across major U.S. streaming platforms in 2019 and today, has over 220m streams on YouTube alone.
