Burundi has sent a specialised team of ten people to Turkey to assist with the rescue and recovery efforts following last week’s catastrophic earthquake.

“[They] will be deployed by Turkish authorities to areas where they need them most”, Burundi Foreign Affair Minister Albert Shingiro told the BBC.

More than 28,000 people have died in Turkey and neighbouring Syria as a result of the earthquake.

According to Shingiro, a Burundian citizen who was in the hardest-hit city of Gaziantep was evacuated to the capital Ankara.

Burundi did not send a team to Syria because  “access to affected areas is difficult,” according to the minister, but he added, “we sympathise with the suffering brotherly people of Syria.”
