Two unidentified passengers are reported to have plunged into the Lagos lagoon following a commercial vehicle accident on the recently reopened Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
The incident occurred around 11 am on Wednesday when the vehicle’s brakes failed near Adeniji Adele inward Lagos Island, causing serious injuries to other passengers due to the vehicle’s high speed.
Emergency management officials, including marine police, conducted a search operation for the two adults involved. The injured passengers have been taken to the General Hospital, Lagos Island.
According to Olatunde Akinsanya, the Director of Operations at Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the accident involved an LT commercial bus carrying 22 passengers.
The bus reportedly traveling at high speed, collided with the bridge’s barrier, leading to the passengers falling into the lagoon.
NEMA’s Lagos Territorial Coordinator, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed that the driver’s high speed caused the accident, pushing two passengers off the bus into the lagoon.
The victims are being searched for by the Marine Police. At the time of writing this, there was no report indicating that the two passengers have been rescued.
Recall that the Third Mainland Bridge was fully reopened recently after repairs on April 4.
Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had cautioned motorists against overspeeding, after an accident happened on the bridge shortly after repairs.
Speed limit signs have been strategically placed to ensure strict compliance.
