Busan, South Korea, is set to host the fifth and final round of negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty from November 25 to December 1, 2024. This pivotal meeting brings nations together to finalise a legally binding agreement aimed at addressing plastic pollution throughout its entire lifecycle.
The treaty stems from a resolution adopted by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in March 2022, heralded as a historic step toward a sustainable, plastic-free future. UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen underscored the urgency of the moment, stating, “Busan can and must mark the end of the negotiations, which began with the historic UNEA resolution over two years ago.”
The proposed treaty aims to tackle plastic pollution comprehensively by addressing the challenges of production, usage, and disposal, as well as the severe impact of plastics on the marine environment. Earlier negotiation sessions made significant strides, with progress building toward a consensus in Busan. However, critical issues remain unresolved. Key questions loom: Will the treaty’s final text be ambitious enough to ensure global compliance? Will it establish a framework for financial sustainability?
As the deadline approaches, the world’s eyes turn to Busan. Decisions made during this critical week will determine if this landmark agreement fulfills its promise to “end plastic pollution” and chart a course toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
