There’s confusion surrounding the death of Confederation of Africa Football’s doping doctor, Dr. Joseph Kabungo following Super Eagles’ 2022 World Cup qualifier 1-1 against the Black Stars of Ghana.

After Tunisian referee Selma Selik blew the final whistle at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Tuesday evening, irate fans stormed the pitch, wreaking havoc on facilities.

Some Nigeria football officials were also attacked.  The doping officer for the game, Joseph Kabungo from Zambia, suddenly collapsed and died.

The cause of his death is yet to be ascertained and there has been no official report from the NFF.

However, News Central Sports Correspondent said “The riotous fans beat him, he fell and they stomped on him. He lost consciousness and was rushed to an ambulance closer to the Ghana dressing room for CPR. The entire Ghanaian contingent watched on in alarm as resuscitation attempts were made with oxygen mask…He was taken to the hospital, and later died.”

Award-winning journalist and Chief Editor Goal.com, Shina Oludare said he was assaulted by wild-looking military officers in spite of identifying himself.

Kabungo, a former Mufulira Wanderers goalkeeper was said to have died shortly after Ghana stopped Nigeria from qualifying for the 2022 World Cup on Tuesday.

The deceased was a Zambian medical practitioner and once served as Chongwe and Siavonga District Chief Health Medical Officer. At UNZA his mates fondly called him, “Walter Zenga” after the Italian great goalie.
