Authorities in the Central African Republic have announced that the country’s first municipal elections in 34 years will be postponed due to inadequate funds.

The head of the elections authority Mathias Barthelemy Morouba told newsmen: “We have got behind in organising the elections and they will not be able to take place” on the planned date.

Mr Morouba informed newsmen on Wednesday that the authorities lacked the $15 million (£11 million) required to run the elections which were slated for September 11.

In a related development, Somalia had extended its elections to March 31, a process that is already more than a year overdue and has resulted in political sanctions.

On Tuesday evening, the electoral body announced the second postponement, further delaying the election for a new president and extending a political crisis in a country that is also dealing with drought and an Islamist insurgency.
