Asisat Oshoala, Super Falcons forward, was crowned the best female player on the continent, earning a record-breaking fifth honor.
The Barcelona attacker has surpassed her countrywoman Perpetua Nkwocha to become the first player in history to win the CAF African Women’s Player of the Year award a record five times.
Oshoala was named the 2022 Africa Player of the Year alongside Senegal star Sadio Mane at the CAF football awards ceremony held in Rabat, Morocco, yesterday evening. Oshoala faced fierce competition from Cameroonian Ajara Nchout Njoya and new newcomer Grace Chanda of Zambia.
The Falcons star thanked her teammates in her acceptance speech and said that the team’s fortitude in defeating Morocco on Monday, while playing with two fewer players, was admirable.
Oshoala may have had her best season to date in 2021–22 after helping her Spanish team win the Spanish Women’s Super Cup, Copa de la Reina, and Primera Division.
Even though she missed a few games due to injury, she nevertheless ended up tied for the league’s top scorer with Geyse Ferreira, who scored the same number of goals in 27 appearances for Madrid CFF, after scoring 20 goals in 19 league appearances. Due to the fact that she participated in less games than the Brazilian, she would win the prized Pichichi trophy.
She scored impressive goals against Real Sociedad, Valencia, Villarreal, and Real Betis, including a hat-trick and a double.
She scored against Real Madrid in her lone Copa de la Reina appearance, in which she played for just 78 minutes.
Barcelona lost the UEFA Women’s Champions League final 3-1 against Olympique Lyon at the Juventus Stadium in Turin, denying her team the opportunity to win a quadruple.
