CAF organise workshop for AFCON 2019 coaches

Ahead of the draws for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) organized a workshop on Wednesday for the coaches of all 24 qualified teams to familiarize them with guidelines and rules for the tournament.

The coaches were brought up to speed with the latest refereeing guidelines and also updated on the impending use of GPS trackers on players involved in the tournament to measure their performance and other indicators.

During a meeting in Niamey, Republic in February this year, CAF announced that video assistance referee will be used for the first time at this year’s AFCON. While this will be the first time VAR will be used in an AFCON tournament, it won’t be the first time it is used in African football.

VAR was used during the quarter-finals of the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco. Following the trials, CAF resolved to adopt it in the finals of both the Champions League and Confederation Cup. The workshop afforded coaches of the qualified teams to obtain guarantees on its application during the African Cup of Nations.
