The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Wednesday that the next Africa Cup of Nations finals will be postponed for six months till early 2026.
The 2025 edition in Morocco was scheduled for next June but the dates clashed with the expanded 32-team Club World Cup, which will be held in the US from June 15 to July 13.
Africa will have four teams at the Club World Cup and many of those players are likely to be picked for the Cup of Nations.
Mosengo-Omba said that while the tournament can go on after the Club World Cup, it won’t be in the interests of the players who have played all season to travel to America and play in another event so soon.
“Scheduling is a nightmare for everybody.” He said.
This will be a setback for Morocco, which hoped to use the summer tournament to showcase its growing tourism industry and demonstrate its capability to host a major event ahead of the 2030 World Cup, which it is co-hosting with Portugal and Spain.
