Former AC Milan captain Davide Calabria has joined Bologna on loan until the end of the season following an on-pitch altercation with coach Sergio Conceicao.
“Bologna have acquired AC Milan defender Davide Calabria on a temporary basis until June 30, 2025,” the Serie A club confirmed in a statement.
Calabria, 28, has spent his entire career at Milan, making 272 appearances and winning the Serie A title in 2022. However, his tenure ended in dramatic fashion after a heated exchange with Conceicao during a 3-2 win over Parma on January 26. The confrontation, which erupted after Calabria was substituted in the 77th minute, saw coaching staff and teammates intervene to separate them.

Following the clash, Conceicao stripped Calabria of the captaincy, handing the armband to French goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Calabria, who was left in tears after departing Milan’s training centre last week, was subsequently omitted from the squad for Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Inter Milan.
“The last few hours were difficult, it’s like when you separate from your wife,” Calabria said.
Milan expressed gratitude for Calabria’s 18-year service, stating: “The club would like to thank Davide for his total commitment, professionalism, and dedication and wishes him all the best in his personal and professional life going forward.”
Meanwhile, Milan confirmed the signing of Mexico striker Santiago Gimenez from Feyenoord on a contract until 2029. The 23-year-old forward netted 65 goals in 105 appearances for the Dutch club and was instrumental in their 2023 Eredivisie title win.
