Canadian authorities are on high alert, anticipating a potential influx of migrants from the U.S. as President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office looms. Trump’s stance on immigration, with plans for mass deportations, has led to heightened vigilance across the extensive southern border of Canada, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Sergeant Charles Poirier of the RCMP stated that increased “boots on the ground” and advanced surveillance are being set up to handle possible irregular crossings. He cautioned that harsh winter conditions pose serious risks, recalling cases of severe frostbite and hypothermia among previous migrants.
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland reassured Canadians, affirming that the government has a plan to secure borders and is prepared for increased arrivals. However, Poirier warned that if large numbers cross all at once, it could become unmanageable.
Canada, which has scaled back its immigration targets, is carefully watching online search trends showing a spike in U.S. interest in relocating north.
