Joao Cancelo has completed his loan transfer from Manchester City to Bayern Munich, which included a €70 million (£62 million/$76 million) purchase option.
After becoming a two-time Premier League title winner and making two PFA Teams of the Year, the versatile Portugal international appeared to have a bright future at the Etihad Stadium, with Pep Guardiola making the most of the 28-year-attacking old’s instincts from full-back. Cancelo, on the other hand, has been allowed to move on after allegedly clashing with his demanding Catalan coach in Manchester.
Cancelo expressed his delight at the deadline-day transfer to Bayern’s official website: “FC Bayern is a fantastic club, one of the best in the world, and it’s a huge motivation for me to now play in a team with these incredible players. I know that this club, this team, lives for and wins championships every year. I’m also motivated by a desire for success. I’ll give FC Bayern my all.”
Cancelo’s professional career began at Benfica. He played for Valencia, Inter Milan, and Juventus before joining Manchester City in 2019. He has 154 competitive appearances and nine goals for the Citizens. The 28-year-old has medals from three different countries. He was a member of the Benfica team that won the Portuguese league, cup, and super cup, the Scudetto and Supercoppa Italiana with Juventus, and the Premier League, EFL Cup, and Community Shield with Manchester City in England. He has 41 caps for Portugal (seven goals) and won the 2019 UEFA Nations League.
