Casbah Building Collapse Kills Woman, Injures Three in Algiers

A woman died and three of her family members were injured on Wednesday after a building collapsed in the UNESCO-listed Casbah of Algiers, emergency services reports.

The desolate building fell past midnight on another building where the deceased and her family lived, said the civil defence agency in the Algerian capital.

Casbah, a historic city built on a hill, has recorded multiple building collapses in recent years.
In 2019, five people, including an infant, died when their home collapsed in the city. The mayor back then was sacked because of the incident.

Originally secured under Ottoman rule in the 16th century, the Casbah was a focal point during Algeria’s 1954-1962 war for independence.
Despite ongoing efforts for conservation, many structures supported by wood and metals remain at risk.
