Forward Leonardo Castro has signed a new two-year contract with South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Kaizer Chiefs.
The Colombian striker has been with Chiefs since the 2017/2018 season after joining from Mamelodi Sundowns and has been in the news regarding his future at the club.
Castro’s contract was due to expire in a few weeks with reports of the player seeking to continue his career elsewhere.
Chiefs announced that the Colombian has agreed a new deal that will see him stay at the club until the end of June 2022.
Castro expressed his joy at signing the new contract and thanked all involved in making it happen.
“I am very happy with the chairman, Kaizer Motaung and the club. I am also grateful to continue to wear the Gold & Black,” he is quoted by the Kaizer Chiefs website.
“This is sensitive for me because I have not won a trophy yet with the team. And to leave without a gold medal would be a defeat for me.”
Castro has been rewarded with this new deal following his stellar performance so far this season.
Before the league got suspended, Castro scored seven league goals for the Amakhosi helping them to the summit of the league table with few games left to be played.
The last time the Amakhosi won a trophy was back in May 2015 when they won the PSL title and Castro says he wants to help his team end the trophy drought.
“I wish to win something,” he added. “And I think with the squad we have at the moment; we are capable of doing well. My family is excited about this development. We are happy to remain in South Africa. Thank you once more to the chairman and the club.” Castro said.
The Colombian has formed an integral part of the Amakhosi setup since joining in January 2018 from the Tshwane-based Mamelodi Sundowns.
Castro has scored a total of 23 league goals since arriving in South Africa, with more of those goals coming in Kaizer Chiefs colours.
