Chadian voters are out on the queues to elect a new President, a major step leading to the end of the country’s three-year military transition.
About eight million voters are expected to vote for president from among ten candidates. The junta leader leader Déby and the prime minister Succès Masra are on the ballot.
In most regions, the voting started an hour behind schedule, in spite of the presence of electoral officers.
President Mahamat Déby has cast his ballot in the capital, N’Djamena.
He says, he remains true to his promise to ensure “elections that will signal a return to constitutional order.”
“It’s up to the Chadian people to vote massively and choose their president,” he stated.
“We will vote, it’s our duty… even if it takes time,” said a voter who stood in a long queue waiting for his turn to cast his ballot.
The provincial results are expected by May 21. However, a second round may hold in June if a clear winner does not emerge in the first round.
