The Chadian Junta says security forces prevented a group of army commanders from “destabilising” the nation in what looked like an attempted coup.

“This plan was devised by a restricted group of conspirators composed of 11 army officers,” the government statement said on Thursday.

Baradine Berdei Targuio, president of the Chadian Human Rights Organisation, was at their helm, it claimed.

Since December 8, security services have detained individuals connected to the conspiracy and have confiscated military hardware, the statement continued.

Since longtime ruler Idriss Deby was killed on the battlefield in 2021 and his son Mahamat Idriss Deby took over, Chad has been on edge.

As protesters flocked to the streets in recent months to call for a faster transition to democratic rule, authorities have cracked down on dissent.

The government referred to the October protests as a “armed rebellion,” but rights organisations characterised them as pro-democracy demonstrations.

Recall, in December 2022, the Gambian government said it thwarted an attempt to stage a coup. Four soldiers had been arrested and three alleged accomplices were on the run.

President Adama Barrow, who was elected to a second term last year, was overthrown on Tuesday, but it is unclear exactly who was behind the plot.

Due to its beaches and wildlife, The Gambia is a mostly stable nation in West Africa that attracts tourists.
