More than 400 rebels were given life sentences by a Chadian court on Tuesday for the murder of former President Idriss Deby.

Following skirmishes with separatists in the country’s north, the former president passed away from his wounds in April 2021. After more than three decades in office, he was among the presidents in Africa with the longest terms in office.

In February, a secret trial for all 465 Front for Change and Accord in Chad rebels began in the country’s capital, N’Djamena.

In addition to other counts, they were found guilty of terrorism, undermining national security, and putting the life of the head of state in jeopardy.

The group has called the trials “masquerades” with flaws. One of the defense attorneys predicted an appeal would be made.
