According to a statement released on Saturday, the Chadian government has removed Jan-Christian Gordon Kricke, the German ambassador, for having a “impolite attitude.”
The decision was “motivated by the impolite attitude and the lack of respect for diplomatic customs by the German ambassador, as prescribed by the Vienna Convention,” a government spokesman said.
Although no more justification was provided, local media sources suggest that the action may have been motivated by ambassador Kricke’s criticism of the present transitional government.
Kricke was given 48 hours to leave the country; he has been the German ambassador to Chad since 2021.
In response to the ambassador’s expulsion, a German foreign ministry official said the reasons given by N’Djamena were “absolutely incomprehensible.”
Since July 2021, Kricke has been Berlin’s representative in the country of Africa. Idriss Deby, who was a commander at the time, was named head of state on April 20 of that year after his father was killed in an encounter with insurgents.
Several countries, including Germany, urged Deby to restore the civilian government in Chad.
