Chad to Chair AU Peace and Security Council

The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council Chairmanship will be presided over by the Republic of Chad in the month of September which has been declared as “Africa Amnesty Month” for the surrender and collection of illegally owned weapons and arms.

According to the the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, the Council’s agenda for September will feature two prominent open sessions. These includes the commemoration of the 2021 Africa Amnesty Month as well as the commemoration of the International Day of Peace.

On his assumption of office as Chairperson of the AU Peace and Security Council, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Chad to the African Union, Mahamad Ali Hassan stated that Chad remains committed to the long amnesty campaign and to work towards silencing the guns in Africa.

Also in the month, the High Representative for Mali and the Sahel and the representative of the United Nations will brief the Council on the situation in Mali while considering the Report of its Evaluation Mission to Mali.

The Peace and Security Council will also consider the mid-year report of the Chairperson of the Commission on elections in Africa from January to June 2021.

This they say will provide an opportunity for the Council members to have a comprehensive discussion of the elections held during the first half of 2021.

During this session, all African countries held elections from January to June 2021 are expected to be invited.
