The Tanzanian opposition party Chadema reported that two of its members were killed just before the local elections on Wednesday and alleged that the authorities tampered with the voting process.
According to Chadema’s statement, a candidate named George Juma Mohamed was shot dead by police after being assaulted by supporters of the ruling party at his home late Tuesday, while another local party leader, Steven Chalamila, lost his life in a machete attack.
The party also highlighted electoral irregularities in seven constituencies, which included instances of ballot box-stuffing.
