Delphine Djiraibé, a human rights activist from Chad, has earned the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders.

Along with Venezuelan rights campaigner Feliciano Reyna and imprisoned Kashmiri rights activist Khurram Parvez, she received the honour.

“The common denominator between the 2023 Laureates… is their courage, passion, and determination to bring the voice of the voiceless to the international arena, despite the ongoing, sometimes life-threatening, challenges they endure,” the award’s jury chair Hans Thoolen said in a statement.

On February 16, the award presentation will take place in Geneva. One of the first female lawyers in her nation is Delphine Djiraibé.

According to a statement from the organizers, she fought for basic rights for all Chadians for more than 30 years, including the right to food, education, health, and other necessities, as well as the rights to life, justice, and freedom of speech.

It stated that Ms. Djiraibé is recognized for having started the trial of Hissène Habré, the former dictator of Chad, who was found guilty of war crimes in 2016 after 14 hard years.

The Martin Ennals Award bears the name of the late British attorney who served as Amnesty International’s first executive director.
