The biggest opposition group in Zimbabwe claims that Nelson Chamisa would run against Emmerson Mnangagwa in the presidential elections for a second time.

The single contender, Chamisa, a lawyer and Christian preacher, was named by the Citizens Coalition for Change and will undergo screening before being formally proclaimed as a candidate.

Prior to the August poll, the party has charged that the ruling Zanu-PF party has been repressing its political rivals. The authorities have prohibited several opposition campaign rallies.

Chamisa charged last week that the government had used the law into a weapon and had imprisoned Job Sikhala, a CCC politician, without cause since June after being charged with posting false information.

Chamisa was the MDC Alliance’s candidate for president in the 2018 general election, having previously been the leader of the party’s youth assembly.

He has served as the former chairperson of national youth for the same party as well as the Secretary for Information and Publicity for the opposition party Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). In 2003, at the age of 25, Chamisa became the youngest Member of Parliament.

Nelson was also the youngest cabinet minister in the Government of National Unity of Zimbabwe in 2009.
