Chelsea Midfielder Fernandez Faces Action Over Racist Video

Chelsea have initiated disciplinary measures against midfielder Enzo Fernandez following his social media post he made that the French Football Federation claimed contained an alleged “racist and discriminatory” chant.

The FFF announced on Tuesday its intention to file a formal complaint with the world governing body FIFA regarding the video, which showed members of the Argentina squad singing a song with derogatory references to France’s black players. France and Chelsea player Wesley Fofana shared the video on Instagram, condemning it as an unmistakable display of racism.

Fernandez apologised for the video he posted about Argentina celebrating winning the Copa America.

“The song includes highly offensive language, and there is no excuse for these words,” said Fernandez.

“I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations.

“That video, that moments, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character.” He added.

Seven French players, including Fofana, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Lesley Ugochukwu, Christopher Nkunku, Malo Gusto, and Malang Sarr, are black or mixed race in Chelsea’s first-team squad.

The club released a statement saying it was a diverse and inclusive club that would not tolerate discriminatory behaviour.

“We acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate.
