Chelsea and Australia striker Sam Kerr allegedly called a British police officer “stupid and white” during an incident at a London police station, a jury was told on Monday.
Sam Kerr, 31, is on trial for racially aggravated harassment against PC Stephen Lovell following an altercation in the early hours of January 30, 2023. The court heard that Kerr and her partner, fellow footballer Kristie Mewis, had been out drinking before a taxi driver took them to a police station in southwest London.
The driver accused the pair of refusing to pay clean-up costs after one of them vomited and of smashing the car’s rear window. At the station, Kerr allegedly became “abusive and insulting” toward PC Lovell.

Jurors at Kingston Crown Court were shown body camera footage in which Kerr is heard telling the officer: “Honestly, you guys are… stupid and white.”
Prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones said Lovell felt “shocked, upset, and humiliated” by Kerr’s comments, arguing that his race “had nothing to do with anything.”
Kerr, who is of mixed race, has denied intending to cause harassment or distress, describing the situation as “distressing and a heated moment.”
Her lawyer, Grace Forbes, acknowledged Kerr’s words but argued they were not criminal. “The words were a comment, however poorly expressed, about positions of power, about privilege, and how those things might colour perception,” she said.
Sam Kerr, who has played for Chelsea since 2020, remains sidelined with a knee injury.
