The Abia State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Hon. Chinedum Orji. This decision was made by 18 out of 27 members of the Assembly who convened at an undisclosed location. The motion for impeachment was initiated by Chukwudi Apugo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who represents Umuahia-East, and was seconded by Okey Igwe of the PDP, who represents Umunneochi Constituency. The lawmakers have accused the Speaker of gross misconduct and high-handedness.
However, a source close to the Abia state government has dismissed the impeachment as “Legislative Nollywood,” indicating that it lacks credibility. The source also pointed out that the House of Assembly complex was locked, so taking such action outside the premises is a violation of the law.
The Clerk of the House was not present to swear in the new Speaker, casting doubts on the validity of the impeachment. This development has raised concerns and questions about the legality of the process that led to Orji’s removal.
