The Kano State Government has urged residents not to drink rainwater to prevent the spread of cholera.
In a statement issued by Ibrahim Abdullahi, Head of the Public Relations Unit at the Ministry of Health, residents were advised to exercise caution and consume only purified water.
This precaution comes as the rainy season has been associated with cholera outbreaks reported in various states.
“Hence, it is necessary to warn and remind the people that prevention is better than cure. People should always examine what they take, most importantly vegetables, fruits and drinking water. People need to be wary in this regard to protect themselves from contaminated food or water.
“It is important for people to understand that the rainwater at the beginning of the rainy season is unclean. If one must use it, it must then be purified using water treatment substances, including boiling and filtering before use.
“This will help greatly to safeguard people against the bondage of cholera.”
Residents of Kano were encouraged to wash their fruits and vegetables thoroughly with clean water before eating, especially due to the inadequate sanitation conditions in local markets.
Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, the Health Commissioner, reassured the public that Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration prioritises healthcare and will continue to do so.
Residents were also advised to promptly report any illness to the nearest health facility.
The World Health Organisation reported a surge in cholera cases across multiple global regions on Thursday, with nearly 195,000 cases and over 1,900 deaths documented in 24 countries since the beginning of 2024.
