Cholera Outbreak: NCDC Launches National Emergency Operations Centre

Following the recent cholera outbreak resulting in 53 deaths across 31 states, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has mobilised its National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

In an announcement on the NCDC’s official X handle on Monday, the agency highlighted a comprehensive risk assessment of the current epidemiological situation of the disease. This assessment indicated a significant risk of heightened cholera transmission, prompting the NCDC to activate the EOC.

The report said, “As of June 24, 2024, a total of 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths have been recorded across 31 states.

“Following a dynamic risk assessment of the cholera epidemiological situation that placed the country at a very high risk of increased cholera transmission, the NCDC took this step to coordinate the response to the outbreak, saying that as of June 24, 2024, a total of 1,528 suspected cases have been reported.”

In Ogun State, one person has died and 25 cases were confirmed out of 35 suspected cases. The state government has underscored its efforts by distributing test kits and treatment supplies to every local government area, as well as designating treatment centres where free medical care is available in all government facilities.

Furthermore, the NCDC is working closely with state authorities to manage the outbreak effectively and prevent its escalation.
