The Katsina State Government, under the leadership of Governor Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda, has announced plans to introduce a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants.
The move intends to ease the financial strain caused by the removal of the fuel subsidy by the Nigerian Government.
Deputy Governor Farouk Jobe made the announcement during the inauguration of a committee responsible for managing the new wage structure. He explained that many residents were struggling due to rising costs, prompting the government to create a plan for adjusting salaries.
The minimum wage increase will apply to all state workers, including teachers in public schools, as well as staff in local government areas.
The committee in charge of the implementation is chaired by Abdullahi Faskari, a former deputy governor and current Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
Other members include the State Head of Civil Service, Falalu Bawale; Budget and Economic Planning Commissioner, Bello Kagara; Finance Commissioner, Bashir Tanimu, who also oversees local government and chieftaincy affairs; and representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The committee will also include the state’s Accountant-General, Auditor-General, and Chairmen of ALGON, NULGE, and the State Internal Revenue Service. The Permanent Secretary, Department of Establishment and Training, will act as the committee’s secretary.
Jobe confirmed that the committee is expected to present its report within three weeks, outlining how the new wage structure will be implemented across the state.
