Despite the Guinea junta’s prohibition on gatherings since May and its decision to dissolve the FNDC last month, there was a clash on Monday between civilians and security forces in a number of Conakry suburbs.
During the clash, about ten youths were apprehended in one neighborhood. Businesses were closed and traffic was stopped where people had gathered, and protesters attempted to build barricades that were swiftly dismantled by security personnel.
Additionally, pick-up vehicles from the security personnel were positioned along the major axis path through the suburbs.
One year to the day after former president Alpha Conde was overthrown by a military coup, there were recent unrests on the outskirts of Conakry.
Guinea has been ruled by a military-dominated administration since September 2021, under the leadership of Colonel Mamady Doumbouya. Within three years, Doumbouya promises to cede control to elected civilians.
The protest was organised by the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC), a political alliance, to seek a shorter transition time. Five persons were killed at rallies that the FNDC, a combination of political parties, labor unions, and civil society organisations, held on July 28 and 29.
