Club Africain coach Chiheb Ellili has resigned as manager of the Tunisian team after their 8-0 loss to TP Mazembe in the CAF Champions League.

The result set a new record for the biggest win in the competition, overtaking the mark set in 2001 by Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas who beat CR Belouizdad of Algeria 7-0.

Ellili who took charge of the club in October 2018 told a local radio station in Tunisia that his resignation was out of respect for the club’s fans.

“The loss of yesterday is, for me, an accident of course because the team is on the right track”

“Too bad for the players, who have given everything for months, to lose in this way.

“On a personal level, I think this is the worst moment of my career. I’m a fighter and a winner and I really did not want to live this nightmare.”

The defeat left Tunisians bottom of Group C without just one point from their first two matches.

Club Africain are expected to name a replacement for Ellili before the end of the week.
