Former Guinean President Alpha Conde, ousted in a coup in September, boarded a plane on Monday to fly abroad for a medical checkup; however, it is unclear where he will be going.
The ruling junta decided last month that the ex-president would be allowed to travel for medical reasons, but could not remain abroad for more than a month.
Conde, according to reports, boarded a plane at 2 p.m. local time. A top government official confirmed his departure.
The coup in September was condemned by Guinea’s neighbours and international partners, resulting in Guinea being suspended from both the African Union and the 15-nation Economic of West African States (ECOWAS).
Conde, 83, who had been in power since 2010, was detained by the military junta after his ouster by officers accusing the government of rampant corruption.
